Meet a bug with one powerful bite: the raspy cricket, which lives in the rainforests of northern Australia. Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently found that it has the strongest bite out of more than 650 insect species from around the world.

The researchers tested how hard different bugs could bite down by having them chomp on a small sensor. The tool converted each bite’s mechanical energy—energy due to position or motion—into an electrical current that measures force. The researchers assembled that data into a huge catalogue of insects’ bite strength that scientists will be able to reference in the future.
