Ride, who died in 2012, was a space shuttle mission specialist from 1983 to 1987. She was also one of the first LGBTQ+ astronauts. “Sally Ride changed what it meant to be an astronaut,” says Laura Danly, curator of the Griffith Observatory in California.
Ride’s commemorative quarter will feature her looking out of a space shuttle window at Earth, honoring a legacy that continues to inspire science-enthusiasts from all walks of life.
